Post-game reactions after Atlético de Madrid - Club

UEFA Champions League

An bitter and in the end emphatic defeat at Atlético de Madrid means the end to Club Brugge's fabulous UEFA Champions League campaign. Read all reactions here.

Hans Vanaken: "4-1 is too harsh"

"I think we should have taken the lead in the first half," Hans Vanaken said straight off the pitch. "I think we had enough chances to get that 1-2. This would have given us a bit more space in the second half for Tzolis or Forbs to dive into, but that just wasn't the case now. Then that 2-1 falls too early. After that we also had some chances, but in the end you have to take more risks and Atlético took maximum advantage of that."

"I think 4-1 is too harsh a result, especially if you look at the course of the match. It's bitter, but conceding seven in two games is just too much. Some bad luck was also involved in that, of course, but nevertheless. Just like last season, we can be proud of our Champions League run. No Round of 16 this season, but from now on all our focus goes to the league."

Simon Mignolet: "The game did not go the way we hoped it would"

"In the locker room at halftime, given the chances, we still felt that we were the better team," Simon Mignolet opened his press talk afterwards. "To be honest, I think at halftime it should have been 0-2, but the scoreboard showed 1-1. I take full responsibility for their first goal, because that ball should never really go in. Nevertheless, it happened.

The second half then starts disastrously for us with that immediate 2-1 forcing you to chase again. As time passes, you have to throw it all open and Madrid of course has the players to finish it off on the break. We got some more slight chances, but the way the match went today just wasn't the way we expected.

We knew it was going to be a difficult match anyway, but we made it difficult on ourselves. Overall, Atlético Madrid is the deserved winner, although we certainly had opportunities to advance. Obviously we are all disappointed, but we will also deal with that as a group."
