Club Brugge lift the Volkswagen Supercup thanks to a 1-2 win away at Union. Blauw-Zwart showed ruthless efficiency in the first half to lay the groundwork for the first silverware of the season.
The game got off to a lively start, with both sides eager to draw first blood. Union threatened early on through a strike from Rasmussen, but it was Ivanovic who broke the deadlock after 15 minutes. Slipped in neatly by Rodriguez, the Union forward kept his cool and slotted home to make it 1-0.
But Brugge hit back almost immediately. Just past the half-hour mark, Vetlesen was brought down in the box, leaving the referee no choice but to point to the spot. Christos Tzolis stepped up and made no mistake from twelve yards — 1-1.
With momentum shifting, Club Brugge pressed on and got their reward right on the stroke of half-time. Tzolis turned provider with a sharp low ball across the face of goal, and Hans Vanaken arrived right on cue to finish first-time: 1-2.
The second half maintained its intensity, though chances were harder to come by. Union pushed for an equaliser, with efforts from Eckert and Puertas, but Brugge’s backline stood firm. Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet also had to be alert, pulling off a couple of crucial stops to preserve the lead.
In the end, Club Brugge saw it out professionally and marked the start of the season in style — hoisting the Volkswagen Supercup for a record 18th time.
