FROM MODEST AIRPORT TO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
The history of the Ostend-Bruges airport takes us back more than 100 years, because already during the First World War the then airport of Stene was used as a runway for military flights. The number of flights increased rapidly and so the airport was moved to its current site and renamed as an international airport, specializing in flights to and from England.
In addition to transporting passengers, the airport soon put extensive effort into freight transport. And with success, because decades later, Ostend-Bruges is Belgium's second most important airport for cargo air transport: in 2021, the airport carried no less than 62,000 tons of cargo, including many perishable goods such as fruit and vegetables from Egypt, fish from Uganda and Tanzania, and flowers from Kenya and South Africa.

Not only freight transport, but also passenger transport has been gradually expanded over the past 20 years. The airport now offers 22 sunny destinations, including every major vacation region on the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands, as well as private planes, business trips and ad hoc flights.
