Reactions after Club Brugge - KV Mechelen

Jupiler Pro League

Find out what the main actors in tonight's victory against KV Mechelen had to say.

Kyriani Sabbe: "Very pleased with that 4-1 win"

"I think we played a fine game," Kyriani Sabbe opened his press chat afterwards.

"We were in control from the start It's unfortunate we still conceded, but for the rest we can be very pleased with this 4-1 win. Of course I am happy that I was able to score twice myself, because as a defender that is not all that obvious. Against Standard, for instance, I had similar chances and I couldn't capitalise on them back then. I did practice on finishing afterwards and today was proof that it paid off."

"Unlike in previous games, we kept going to put our opponent under pressure. Even at 3-0, we kept our foot on the pedal maintaining our grip on the game. And yes, now it actually all starts for us. It is common knowledge that we want to get that second star on our badge, so there is only one thing that matters this season and that is the title. Everyone knows what's at stake soon in playoff 1, you can be sure of that."

Nicoló Tresoldi: "Ten more finals to play"

"I think we played almost a perfect game," were the first words of Nicoló Tresoldi.

"From the first second we were closing in on them and when you can score in your first attack, you get another boost and that translated into two more goals in the first half. After the break they were able to score a counter goal out of nothing, but I think that's the only blemish on our game tonight. I thought we looked very eager and even when the substitutes came in, we kept pushing.

There was a moment in the second half when I was angry with myself, because I definitely should have scored a second goal. To become top scorer in the Belgian league would be nice of course, but the team is what matters most to me. We will see where it all ends after the next ten games. Now we head towards the international break and then we have to play ten more finals to win the title, it's simple as that."

Hugo Vetlesen: "We played the perfect game"

Hans Vanaken's replacement was pleased with his match and the team's performance.

"It was a very nice night. I'm more than satisfied, because we actually played the perfect match, except for a short stint in the second half where we took our foot off the pedal for a very short time. We put the right intensity on the pitch from the beginning and then it becomes difficult to beat us. I played my game and tried to replace Vanaken as best I could."

With a subtle deviation, he managed to set Sabbe on his way to the 2-0. Whether it was a Vanaken assist? "No, not that, it was a Hugo Vetlesen assist," the Norwegian grinned. "We already talked about playing in like that at training and then it's nice to be able to see that reflected in the match. The fact that the supporters chanted my name when I was subbed does a lot of good."

Brandon Mechele: "We will need everyone in the Play-Offs"

It felt strange not to see Hans Vanaken on the pitch, goal scorer Brandon Mechele confirmed.

"Hans is always there, but Hugo did a great job. This match once again showed the importance of a strong selection. It's good for the team that we don't lose quality when an important player is unavailable. The matches have been following each other in quick succession for some time, but this week there was room for a few days off. That was welcome. We will need everyone to be ready for the playoffs."

Ivan Leko: "We will prepare every match like a cup final"

Ivan Leko saw his team finish the regular league with an emphatic 4-1 victory against fellow play-off 1 team KV Mechelen. "We started out very strong. We were in control from the first second, played with great intensity, put high pressure, created chances and also scored with perfect timing. At halftime it was 3-0 and then you know you're almost there. But we highlighted during the break that in the second half we had to play like it was 0-0, because you know that one action can turn a game around. We unfortunately conceded another goal, so that's still a small downside. But I am very happy with today's performance. There was only one team on the pitch, and we were very dominant. This 4-1 is a nice result, as it could have been 6-1 or 7-1 rather than 4-2."

Club Brugge will be kicking off the Champions' Playoffs in two weeks just one point behind Union. "We will now first celebrate this victory and have a small break over the next few days. After that, our preparation for the playoffs will begin. That's a completely new league, so the results of the past 30 matches are of no consequence. It's like closing a book and starting a new one. It has happened many times before that teams with a big deficit are in top form just in those last two months of the season and therefore still undo their deficit. If you look at the statistics of the last three months, we are the best team, but that doesn't mean anything. I am happy with what I see from my team, but we have to stay humble and keep working hard. We will prepare every match as if it were a cup final."
