Hans Vanaken: "Deserved the win"
Taking that equaliser in stoppage time clearly bummed out skipperHans Vanaken.
“We need to up our efficiency, we lose out on too many points. That second half saw enough chances to widen the gap, and we need to capitalise on those in order to kill the game. We would have claimed three points.”
Victory was in reach, but Vanzeir took it out of Club's hands with that injury time goal. “Based on the chances we created, I reckon we deserved that win. Up until our opener we were struggling a little, with difficulty of retaining possession. After that things were much better, and we were able to play between the lines, finding the space to create big chances. As a team, we should be disappointed about this result, as we deserved better.” Vanaken concluded.
Simon Mignolet: "Should have killed the game"
The late goal also dampened Mignolet's spirits, not called upon that many times, but chanceless as Vanzeir tapped it in from close range.
“It's something that has been going on for a couple of weeks now: we create a lot of chances, but don't make the most of it. You just know that, against a team the likes of Gent, that one ball can still come, and that's what happened, leaving us without a margin. Our opener presented us with the ideal scenario, and we had some chances to double that lead in the second half. We didn't, offering our opponents the chance to keep believing.”
Looking for a reason for this, Club's goalie wouldn't hear of the games following each other up so quickly. "I don't believe fatigue is at play. Ghent saw players coming off injured, which we didn't, with the excepetion of Seys. It's just a matter of killing off a game in fine timing. To get back to those efficient ways, and that means scoring more, but also conceding less. It has to do with confidence, and with the pressure in those last games."
We are nearing the conclusion of the regular league, which adds to the tension.“You want to grab as many points as you can before taking on those play-offs. It's not as if you're playing a bad team here in Ghent. It's important to scrutinize this result, and to try and find solutions as quickly as we can” Mignolet further indicated.
Nicky Hayen: "Need more efficiency"
Heartbreak for Club as it conceded the equaliser in stoppage time.
"When you make the trip to Ghent, as Club Brugge, you need to bring a certain dose of agression to the table", the coach started his post-match analysis. "And this from minute 1, you know this is a contested game. We absolutely did not show this in the first half, came late, played too far away from our man. We allowed Ghent to play the way they wanted, undergoing the game at that point. And this until we scored, which came out of nowhere somewhat. We also didn't find the right solutions in possession. We played a bit better after that opener, finding the space a bit better, without proving too dominant. Our second half came with us finding the opening much easier, giving us the chance to make it 0-2. We didn't capitalise on that, and conceded that equaliser in injury time. They could have even gone on to win it, with the belief they still had. We could definitely have won this game withg the number of chances we created, but we just needed a bit more efficiency to do so", Club's coach lamented.
