That soccer is the most fascinating sport in the world, we obviously don't have to explain to you anymore. After the hyped Super Bowl finale, this is now evident from the ratings.
On Sunday night, many fans of American football sat in front of the tube. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers took on the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl, the final game of the American Football League. The Super Bowl is often considered one of the biggest sporting events of the year, yet it cannot compete with soccer, according to research by Statista. Official viewing figures for Super Bowl 2021 are still some time away, but the 2020 edition watched about 150 million viewers worldwide.
Nice numbers, yet they pale in comparison to soccer figures: the past three World Cup finals were watched by more than half a billion TV viewers each. In 2018, for example, a whopping 517 million global viewers watched France take home the World Cup after their win against Croatia. The Champions League final also attracted a lot more viewers than the Super Bowl: the final between Real Madrid and Liverpool in 2018 watched no less than 380 million soccer fans worldwide. So King Football still remains firmly on the throne in TV land as well.
